The company Système Castafiore is a UFO in the choreographic landscape. Mixing dance, playful videos and sound collages with ease and lightness, its productions are often populated by dreamlike creatures and imaginary tribes. In ‘Manuel du Merveilleux’ the choreographer Marcia Barcellos and the producer-composer Karl Biscuit, heirs of Alwin Nikolais and Oskar Schlemmer, visit a fairytale land but they approach it from an unusual angle: its structure. To do so, they chose an exemplary guide in the form of Vladimir Propp, a Russian folklorist and ethnologist who put forward a theory of the short story in the early 20th century. For the irresistible Barcellos and Biscuit, this scientific endeavour forms a pretext for their ludicrous ramble, which is at once poetic and bizarre. What motivates their approach? A need for wonderment and for imagination. When Marcia Barcellos appears on stage she is constantly in motion and in song, accompanied by four dancers, a lute-player and an actor. Once upon a time…
