Stomp
Since 1991 when ‘Stomp’ was created by Luke Cresswell and Steve McNicholas at the Edinburgh Festival, the Stomp phenomenon has become a ‘cult show’ that never ceases to amaze. Neither theatre, dance nor music, it is all three at once. It is urban and primitive, a frantic rhythmic jubilee, packed with humour that unites people of all ages, filling each with the same enthusiasm. The eight performers, at once actors, dancers and drummers, create a contemporary form of rhythmic expression that is constantly evolving, using domestic items as musical instruments. It is a symphony for brooms, pipes, bins, buckets and sinks, something between industrial recycling and a scene from everyday life. Everything is in place to create music that celebrates the freedom of gestures, a constant invention in which rhythm is king, something universal whose devastating humour is a pleasure shared. This richly imagined and the wildly ingenious production is overwhelming, while the technical perfection of the movements and the choreographic ‘writing’ are impressive. New sections are constantly fed into the show, making Stomp an absolute must-see (or a must-see again for some)!
