Shang-Chi Sun

Nüwa (création 2009)

With the backing of the BNP Paribas Foundation

We discovered Taiwanese dancer Shang-Chi Sun at the International Solo Theatre Festival in Stuttgart in 2008, where he won first prize. We fell in love. Several months later, we invited him to appear on stage for the introduction of our 2008-09 season. Each night we were captivated by his breathtaking neoclassical technique, enhanced by his practice of tai-chi. The current director of the Balletto Teatro di Torino offered him the opportunity to join the cast of his show for the Biennale and we wanted to continue this lovely story by staging his new solo piece in the studio. It is inspired by Nüwa, a character from Chinese mythology, whose origins date back to antiquity. This creator goddess fashioned the first men from clay and gave them the ability to reproduce.

Half-man, half-woman, she is often presented in images appearing as a snake. On stage Shang-Chi is accompanied by a young composer and pianist, Pei-Yu Shi.
