Pierre Rigal
Every year the Suresnes Dance City Festival invites hip-hop dancers and contemporary choreographers to work together and devise original pieces. Here is the show we fell in love with from the 2009 series: Pierre Rigal’s ‘Asphalte’, performed by five bundles of energy, four boys and a girl. There are both performances for schools and performances for parents accompanying children. The clever set features a light block in the centre that allows the space to take on the appearance of a fence, a wall, a building or a screen. Around this illuminating block, the dancers’ silhouettes stand out here and there like Chinese shadow puppets. They use their bodies to relate short stories. Love, glory, war, revolution and beauty, now in flight and now on a quest, the dancers in this choreographic road-movie go through every state. Half-men, half-robots, their bodies stand out in two dimensions against the lit-up oblong like cartoon strip characters. After his solo ‘Press’ presented at the last dance festival, ‘Asphalte’ is yet another creation of distinction for Pierre Rigal!
