Lia Rodrigues

Lia Rodrigues Cia de Danças
Création 2009

Lia Rodrigues is an activist in body, mind and soul. Somewhere between performance art, plastic arts and dance, her productions are born out of a process of raw research, depicted without embellishment, fitting with the state of emergency in which Brazil exists. She does not pull her punches, daring to include pain and nudity. Since 1996, we have shown all of her pieces, and with her new creation this year, we must reiterate how much we admire this rare artist who, instead of making the most of her status as a renowned choreographer and becoming resident in a high-profile theatre, decided years ago to work in the Maré favela. In this town built of bricks and sheet metal, situated by the road to Rio de Janeiro airport, she promotes educational initiatives, trying to preserve values and to stand up against violence and crime. This piece is the culmination of the all the intermediary projects she presented there, that she calls ‘poetic workshops’. Perhaps this is your chance to catch Lia a little calmer and more at peace.
