Koen Augustijnen

Les ballets C de la B
Ashes (création 2009)

‘Ashes’ is the fourth piece from Flemish choreographer Koen Augustijnen, following ‘Import/Export’ which was shown at the Toboggan in 2008. It is a paradoxical work, at once awful and beautiful, set to live music composed by Couperin and Charpentier. In collaboration once again with lyrical counter tenor Steve Dugardin, as well as with a soprano, Koen Augustijnen has chosen music by Handel this time, including his sumptuous love duets. At the heart of this show performed by eight men and women, themes of transcience, the passing of time and the inevitable end are depicted. In the same movement, it portrays humanity fallen but determined not to let go. Five musicians appear on stage to back up this fiery tribe. A very direct and moving way to throw yourself into the battle, this very physical performance has no qualms about breaking out into the theatre.
