Käfig Brasil
At the last Biennale, Mourad Merzouki presented a resounding triumph with kids from the favelas of Rio. In ‘Agwa’, which brings a simple and essential message of hope, the young Brazilian prodigies have brought down the house! All athletes of high-rise tarmac, wearing rubber boots and transparent rain ponchos, they glide between approximately 100 full glasses of water placed on the floor. Under Mourad, past master of the genre, they blend styles without hesitation: hip-hop, capoeira, samba, central European music and bossa nova all bring to the surface a dance of breathtaking acrobatics, crammed with energy and invention. Presented alongside ‘Agwa’ is a new piece created by 11 carioca dancers led by Diego ‘White’, featuring raw and intense hip-hop. Those who find in their passion for dance a determination to struggle through, can make it out the other side.
