Emio Greco | Pieter Scholten et un ensemble composé de musiciens du Conservatoire National Supérieur Musique et Danse de Lyon
[purgatorio] IN VISIONE (2008)

From the doors of Hell to the gates of Heaven is where Emio Greco and Pieter C. Scholten take us. Following on from ‘Hell’, a fiery ensemble piece shown in Lyon in 2007, Emio Greco has returned to writing alone with ‘[purgatorio] IN VISIONE’ and devotes himself to a spellbinding ritual. One dancer and 30 young musicians from Lyon CNSMD (national music and dance conservatoire) appear on stage. The dance is set to St Matthew’s Passion by Bach, or more precisely, to composer Franck Krawczyk’s unusual and deconstructed reworking of this piece. The new score, relieved of the original composition’s vocal sections, unleashes a personal intensity that allows Emio Greco to revisit purgatory in his own way. Alongside the dancer, the musicians accompany this ascent in power towards purification. Contrasts, performance, humour and seriousness pulsate through this remarkable act of defiance, out of which a new connection between music and dance is born.
