Eifman Ballet Théâtre Saint-Pétersbourg

direction artistique Boris Eifman
Don Quichotte (1996-recréation 2009)

Fiercely independent, the Russian choreographer Boris Eifman broke with the strict rules of official academicism thirty years ago to create his own company at Saint Petersburg, which is now made up of sixty dancers with an impeccable technique. He develops a style which thrills classical ballet amateurs and lovers of new interpretations. Ultimate recognition was shown in 2000 when the Bolshoi took up his ballet Hamlet russe into its repertoire.
Olga Spessivtseva, tsar Paul I, Thérèse Raquin, The Brothers Karamazov, Anna Karenina… Eifman likes creating shows about tormented real or fictitious heroes more than anything. The Don Quichotte in the novel by Cervantes, whom he recently revived in 2009, is colourful, full of humour, transposing the action into a refuge to where Don Quichotte, constantly between dream and reality, escapes from his imprisonment through love and kindness. The costumes, scenery and effects onstage are dazzling. And, with its exemplary performance, the whole company takes the spectator to another place with a touch of Spain, immersed in Slavic exuberance.
