Ten years. ‘Complexions’ has not appeared in Lyon for ten years, making this a much-anticipated and significant return in our anniversary season. The hybrid choreography of the New York company is astounding, drawing as much on academic discipline as contemporary liberalism, as well as the jazzy impulses of black American dance. The artistic directors of the company, Dwight Roden and Desmond Richardson are both memorable former soloists with the Alvin Ailey company, and they explore the full scope of movement in all its perfection. The company brings together their friends, performers of exceptional technical and physical abilities, gathered from the four corners of the world, having followed some of the most varied artistic careers. Sculpted bodies, a dynamic and unfailing energy, a sense of rhythm and a choreographic stage presence that is at once masterful and athletic.
