Since choreographer Mourad Merzouki founded Compagnie Käfig in 1996, he has been rolling back the hip-hop frontiers: hanging violins in Récital, narration in Terrain vague, an encounter with Brazilian dancers in Agwa. Here the artist delves into his Lyon childhood and a burgeoning taste for circus and martial arts, for a piece that weds performance and humour, play and challenge. The dance has the lungs, impact and spirit of its urban roots but is also a window on the world, fully reflecting Merzouki’s artistic ethos.
