Her latest creation ‘Cruel’ is a turning point in her career. Less athletic, it has a greater narrative focus and more dancing, and this allows the talents of her performers to burst forth. But Deborah has not turned her back on the spectacular innovations that have earned her the opportunity to create the latest show for Cirque du Soleil. Here, there is a huge wooden table where sharpened knives are placed like dancers’ footsteps. Elsewhere there are halls of mirrors that split dancers in two or segment their bodies in a flood of unusual images. A carnival of brilliance!
