Cia de dança Deborah Colker
Deborah Colker remains convinced that the pursuit of happiness should disregard the laws of movement and weightlessness. The highly charged Brazilian plunges her audience into a world where her uninhibited hyperactivity reigns supreme. Drawing on sport, music videos, circus, ronds de jambe and other clever stage design techniques, her choreography uses every trick in the book. She is used to being a big hit at the Maison de la Danse. The last productions we showed, ‘Rota’ (the big wheel) and ‘4 por 4’ (the Chinese vases), which demand performers with ever greater dexterity and speed, were cheered by more than 15,000 spectators! Her latest creation ‘Cruel’ is a turning point in her career. Less athletic, it has a greater narrative focus and more dancing, and this allows the talents of her performers to burst forth. But Deborah has not turned her back on the spectacular innovations that have earned her the opportunity to create the latest show for Cirque du Soleil. Here, there is a huge wooden table where sharpened knives are placed like dancers’ footsteps. Elsewhere there are halls of mirrors that split dancers in two or segment their bodies in a flood of unusual images. A carnival of brilliance!
