All of Catherine Diverrès’ pieces are rooted in contrast: power and conviction, but doubt and fragility too. Referencing the Biennale’s title, this new work strips bare the word encore – rich in dreams and desire that are borne in the dancers’ gestures like hidden treasure. The piece swings majestically between past and future. At one extreme, festive high jinks: a parade of wild imagery, with masks and grotesque clownery; the artifice and fascinating machinery of theatre. At the other, an empty space to fill.
