Carolyn Carlson
‘Blue Lady’, the legendary solo dance created by Carolyn Carlson in 1983, left indelible images all over the world, crystallising the dreams, aspirations and emotions of thousands of spectators. By passing the role on to Tero Saarinen, an unforgettable event in the 2008 Biennale, Carlson delivered a masterstroke. They share many deep connections such as a common artistic outlook, the same aesthetic and their Finnish origins, making Carolyn and Tero fit together like yin and yang. This strong artistic lineage has made possible the realisation of this rare gift: a work reinvigorated by a second artist, endowing it with a new physical density. ‘Blue Lady’ delivers to the public the magic of this intimate shared process, these precious moments that touch the soul and radiant memories that remain in the heart.
This exceptional revival is for us one of the most moving symbols in our celebration of our 30th anniversary in June 2010: a piece that is carried both by the vital flame of its performance and by the eyes in which it is reflected.
