Grande Salle
Ballet de l'Opéra national de Bordeaux
A brilliant show pitched halfway between dream and reality, ‘Coppélia’ is the ultimate classical French ballet. Since it was created at the Opéra de Paris in 1870, it has thrived on social change and the imagination of its choreographers. After the immensely successful ‘Don Quichotte’ staged right here, Charles Jude decided on a sparkling, rejuvenated and lively version of ‘Coppélia’ for the Ballet de l’Opéra de Bordeaux’s 40 dancers. He transposes the plot into a universe which brings to mind a combination of Jules Verne, the golden age of the Hollywood musical in the 1950s and the legendary Marilyn Monroe, icon of icons and the archetype of seduction. Jude understands how best to highlight and exploit his performers talents and impeccable technique, making the mime scenes of the first act particularly lively. There is an extraordinary amount packed into the second act, including a number of irresistible special effects! A superb production, which retains its touches of lightness, magic and humour.
