Alwin Nikolais’s ‘The Crystal and the Sphere’ is a delightful collage of black light and multimedia, which presents an array of fabulous and surreal characters, all in a phantasmagorical world of psychedelic projections straight out of the 1970s. This show is an incredible journey through the work of an American master, who was born in 1910 and revolutionised contemporary dance in his time with his inventive and avant-garde approach. Witness mysterious shapes, strange sculptures coming to life, taking on splendid hues or colourful patterns. At times the dancing is mechanical, tender and sensual, elsewhere it makes use of amazingprops. This piece remains as fresh, humorous and striking as the day it opened.
