But with his verging-on-words voice and his gestures – a blend of prowess and imbalance – the entertainer speaks for us all. He draws on a turbulent life to reach beyond adversity: dancing for those who, like him, must offset a disability; and proving it can be done by inventing one’s own vocabulary. With every slightest detail and item – garment, plastic bag, stick – he adds a dimension of difference to the language of art.
