Africa Umoja

The South African Hit Musical
Africa Umoja

An exceptional revival in the Amphithéâtre-Cité internationale, reduced to two thousand seats for an optimal stage-audience ratio, following the phenomenal success last season at the Maison de la Danse of the musical saga Africa Umoja, which tells the whole story of South Africa and the apartheid. A total audience in Lyon of nearly nine thousand have already succumbed to the charm, the talent and realism of the company’s thirty-two dancers, singers and musicians and have given them a standing ovation every evening.
Umoja (meaning ‘together’ in Zulu) is tribal songs, miner dances, the jazzy environment of African cabarets and gospels, with a brilliant scene of kwaito to finish, a mixture of hip hop, disco music and funk. An explosion of colours, rhythms, energy and generosity, with performers that all come from the townships of Johannesburg. They tell of their country with an infectious and warm enthusiasm and a striking realism. And what exemplary voices of tune, harmony and emotion.
To see or see again - a delight.
