Shrouded in a whiff of scandal, Vaslav Nijinski’s brilliant and mythical production of Stravinski’s Sacre du printemps on May 29th 1913 has undoubtedly become the symbol of modernity. The film presents a panorama of this work’s successive interpretations during the 20th Century: Mary Wigman, Martha Graham, Mats Ek, Maurice Béjart and Pina Bausch all question the loss of the ritual in the contemporary world and what some refer to as “the wound of modernity”.

A tour in the Eastern European countries with the very special show, Mammame, to encounter “the other Europe” - the chance to celebrate a reunion with people separated from us, who seemed so foreign to us not very many years ago. Putting on Mammame there, an exultant show and foundation of Jean-Claude Gallotta’s work, meant contributing to the fall of all the small walls which divide up our minds to this day.

While he was still virtually unknown to the general public, Charles Garnier won the competition opened by Napoleon III for the construction of a new opera house. Work went on from 1862 to 1875. Garnier dreamt of a palace-show which could compete with the works which were to take their place there, so much so that he wished to be the director of the opera and not just its architect.

From the rehearsals in San Francisco to the triumph of the performances in Venice, this film, almost without words, places us in the bodies and intimacy of the Lines Ballet company. And to crown it all, there are long show extracts.

This film by the BBC (A South Bank Show) follows the life of Wayne McGregor for one year, a choreographer resident at the Royal Ballet. Wayne touches on the artistic directions taken by Covent Garden as well as the relationship between ballet and contemporary dance. The documentary allows us to experience the creation close up and follows the choreographer in the rehearsals of two shows performed on two of the most important London stages in the space of three weeks.
