Kirikou et Karaba
“Kirikou is tiny and he is brave. Such are the words of the song that doubtless almost all the French children are humming, a song that comes from the cartoon that was a worldwide success - Kirikou and the Sorceress – with one-and-a-half-million spectators in France alone and over one million DVDs sold to date, a film illustrating the amazing encounter between the public and a cartoon character. This colourful, exotic and entertaining universe that takes its inspiration from the ancient African culture, with its make-believe, its dances and its stories has now been transformed into an original musical with universal appeal. “I created the story of a small, intense and brave boy and a superbly wicked sorceress, a story around the splendour of black Africa, to transport adults and intrigue children. These were the words spoken by Michel Ocelot, creator of Kirikou, a man who is filled with wonder as he watches his drawings come to life with the global creation of Kirikou and Karaba at the Maison de la Danse, just before it enters its long career at the Casino de Paris. The show’s producers, Victor Bosch (Notre Dame de Paris), Didier Brunner, France Télévisions Distribution and E.M.I., want this to be a great show with wide universal appeal for the whole public. Highly talented choreographer Wayne McGregor, discovered here on the occasion of the 2004 Biennale, is responsible for the production and choreography. The author of the musical is of course Michel Ocelot, who has written some wonderful new songs for this production. The music comes from Youssou N’Dour and Rokia Traoré, among others, and is interpreted by an irresistible band of 21 artists. This is a hymn to Africa and to bravery – and to the unique emotion of a worldwide premiere.
