In order to compose the amazing ERASE-E (X), Johanne Saunier and Jim Cayburgh drew inspiration from an instant in early contemporary art when, in 1953, painter Bob Rauschenberg erased a De Kooning painting, as if by doing so he could take possession of it. The dancer first asked Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker, for whom she had been a highly talented dancer, to compose a phrase of a few minutes for her. This first phrase is full of vivacity, power and virtuosity and is later replayed by the Wooster Group; those friendly revolutionaries from the New York scene include it in a quasi-cinematographic sequence of the original version of Godard’s Mépris. Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker goes through all the Wooster Group material and with Johanne recreates a flawless dance with Indian drums. Finally, director and choreographer Isabella Soupart from Brussels in her turn embroiders a piece on this piece. She brings in actor Charles François and creates a thrilling film noir universe. In the three parts, Johanne Saunier is radiant and uses all the facets of her stunning talent on stage.
